Title: Improvement of the riding comfort for sentosa cable car cabin

Abstract: In this project, the root cause of the high temperature inside the cabins of the Sentosa Cable Car System was investigated. The high temperature inside the cable car cabins affects the rider’s comfort and remains one of the main problem of the upgraded cable car system, Site investigations were conducted to understand the current situation of the cabins as well as the limitation of the cable car system. Experiments were scheduled with the cooperation of the Mount Faber Cable Car Management for the continuous monitoring of cabin temperature and humidity with data loggers for further evaluation of the existing cabin condition and the assessment of the effectiveness of the existing measures implemented by the Mount Faber Cable Car Engineering team. The recorded data were examined, analyzed and diagnosed to identify the possible causes of the problem. Once the information was gathered and the engineering limitations were known, various ideas were explored, conceptualized and developed for the possible improvement of the cabin condition. One of the major constraints with the cable car system is the limited power supply available in each cabin. Renewable energy harvested from the sunlight is considered to be one of the possible alternative power source to support forced air circulation and/or air cooling system inside each cabin. Solar Panel is recommended to harvest the rich solar energy in Singapore as the possible source to provide additional power for each cabin to support the additional devices to be installed inside the cabin for forced air circulation and proposed cooling system. Various ideas were considered, not only in electrical power aspect but also in mechanical design such as a simple fin-like structure (Diverting Fin) which would improve the interior air circulation inside the cabin. Using software simulation, the effectiveness of the Diverting Fin was carefully analyzed and evaluated. The list of feasible cooling concepts will be presented to the Mount Faber Cable Car Group for consideration to be implemented with the hope to improve and reduce the interior temperature of the cabin and hence brings about a relaxing and comfortable ride for the tourist in Singapore.
