Abstract: A 5kW Lithium-ion based battery energy storage system (BESS) is interfaced with the microgrid in Laboratory for Clean Energy Research (LaCER) using a bidirectional converter/inverter system. For the sake of safety and efficiency issues, the battery energy storage system (BESS) needs to employ a Battery Management System (BMS). This report presents the design and realization of a Battery Management System (BMS) in LabVIEW software platform with the help of hardware from NI Corporation. The designed BMS focuses on the calculation of batteries state of charge (SoC). The calculation method of SoC is a combination of voltage-based method and coulomb counting method. Several tests had been conducted to check the accuracy of the SoC calculation method. The protective and balancing functions are also a main part of the designed BMS. This project adopted a simplest resistors-based passive balancing method. Besides built-in protective algorithms, the separated protective part is also programmed for backup. The whole BMS works well. The balancing method is also effective. But there are still many improvement works in future. First, the accuracy of the SoC calculation needs to be improved. Second, a high efficiency balancing method is also needed. More functions for users of BMS are also needed.
