Abstract: Increasing energy demands have contributed to global warming and led to fossil fuels depleting at an alarming rate. Therefore, researchers have looked to alternative sources of energy to meet these demands, and some of the more established ones include solar and wind energy. These renewable energy systems require an energy storage device to store surplus power and deliver additional power when required. Also, they are able to regulate the voltage between the source and the output and ensure power stability and quality. Before that, the energy storage system is required to be at the same potential level as the DC bus of the renewable system. As such, the focus of this project will fall mainly on the design and modeling of the energy storage system, and implemented into a wind energy conversion system. In this project, the author has researched on a few potential candidates for a suitable energy storage device system to be implemented into the wind energy conversion system. The lead-acid and nickel-cadmium battery were selected for comparison. Next, using MATLAB Simulink, models of a battery system and a boost converter were created. These models were tested against reference models to measure their accuracy and were then simulated and verified to have fulfilled necessary conditions before linking them to the DC bus of the stand-alone wind energy conversion system. The stand-alone wind energy conversion system is presented using PSIM. Using a Simcoupler, the battery system and boost converter were linked to the wind system and tests were done to verify that the power balance between the input and output is maintained.
