This thesis is an analysis on Su Wei-Chen’s novel Island of Silence (1994), with regards to the theme of embodied modernities. In the second chapter, with focus on the writings of body (or embodiment), libido and urban impressions, a discussion on the homogenization of human is made. This is followed by Chapter three, an attempt of a new perspective in analyzing the novel Island of Silence, an analysis on the abstract ideas of “being” and “death” in the text, using the philosophy of Existentialism, which leads to a possible explanation of the ending of the novel. Also, with reference to the author’s identity and memories as a writer of the Military Community, chapter four analyses on the modernity of the writings and symbolism of the “father” character in the novel.
