The academic world has always paid attention to Murong Xi’s works, which have always been well-known for emotional themes such as love and nostalgia. However, she has also shown strong awareness for the ecological environment in her early works as well as those in the recent ten years. As a matter of fact, the nostalgia towards her hometown Inner Mongolia is multi-orientated. Her recent works has shown transcendence from self-narratives and developed into caring for the society, extending to a broader environment awareness that encompasses concepts from ecocritical theories such as Ecofeminism and Deep Ecology. This paper seeks to propose that “searching for one’s roots” or nostalgia is not only a conservative and retrospective theme, but also shows solicitude which keeps abreast with modern developments. Through the analysis of two of her proses, Maria Suo and The Free Soul, it will be shown how her identity has transformed from a wanderer in exile to a global eco-citizen who advances with time.
