Title: Design an axial blood pump

Issue Date: 2004
Abstract: An axial flow pump prototype has been designed in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). In-vitro pump characteristics tests performed in this project showed that it is able to provide a pressure of 120 mmHg and a flow rate of 5 litres/min at an operating speed of 10,000 rpm. Experimental results have also indicated that the work done on the fluid is well distributed along the axial length of the pump rotor. This helps to prevent sudden high shear stresses from being exerted on the fluid particles, thus avoiding blood damage. Concept of the shrouded impeller was also introduced and tested as a possible improvement to the initial design of the motor integration prototype.
