Abstract: The increasing demand for better and cheaper products leads to the quest for even better designs as part of the overall product development strategy. Accordingly, companies in different geographical locations need to collaborate in order to realise shorter product life cycle, and hence shorter time to market. In order to assist designers in meeting this challenge in product development, conceptual design in particular, this work attempts to establish an intelligent hybrid approach to design analysis and design synthesis. The work proposes a new conceptual design paradigm known as design concept-capability mapping where past design data are used for the extraction of design rules.
