Abstract: Fretting occurs in mechanical joints of vibrating structures ranging from household appliances, automobiles, aircraft to electrical equipment or even human implants. Application of surface modification methods is expected to be an ideal solution to mitigate the fretting damage, however, the study on the application and the deterioration mechanisms of coatings under fretting conditions is rather limited.
