Abstract: With the increasing affluence of consumers and changes in the shopping patterns of consumers, traditional provision shops are finding it harder to maintain their share of the pie in the retail grocery sector. With the upsurge in modern and bigger supermarkets and mini-marts which often boast of a pleasant, air-conditioned shopping environment and a wider variety of merchandise, these chain retailers are posing a huge threat to the traditional provision shops which often lack in the above-mentioned areas. In order to survive, these older generation shops need to identify their key strengths and fully utilise them. At the same time, their weaknesses should be pointed out and corrected.
