Abstract: Artificial Neural Networks, by their superior pattern-recognition ability are well-suited for intelligent tools for design and development of complex and multi disciplinary structures such as ships. Preliminary design of a Container ship is carried out using feedforward type of Backpropagation (BP) network. The main focus of the study was to develop a database of successful existing container ships in operation and then to formulate a basic design model.
