Zhang Yi He is well known for her memoir-style histories, but in recent year she has steered away from politics. The release of her latest creative fiction works The Liu Woman and The Yang Woman, both centered on “Crimes of Passion” proves to be a pivotal change in her writing style. Male authors tend to defame and at times, demonize, women in their writing, reflecting the unfair treatment of women in a patriarchal society. As a female author, Zhang’s first novel exudes a strong sense of feminism; I can relate her work to Hélène Cixous’ “Écriture Féminine”. She applies the deconstruction theory in her analysis of female criminals and their fates, in a bid to redefine women and lend a voice to the once muted women in the history of literature.
