Abstract: My inspiration of my project comes from the novel “ Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, which was made into a short animation film(1999) by Aleksandr Petrov. The impressive short film achieved many awards and recognitions from different film festivals. Being a fishing enthusiast and animator myself, I was highly interested in this film. Learning more about the symbolism of the film, it drew me in even deeper. The beauty of fishing is not the size of your catch but a fruitful learning process to enjoy life from a different perspective. Fishing seems to be a microcosm of life and often an experience filled with philosophical annotation. Those times that I was not doing well in life were treated as the days when I did not catch anything. I always feel that as long as I am discipline enough to change my bait and cast my line out or move on to a new location, and with the spirit of not giving up, I will get my fish someday. Fishermen are perhaps the greatest storytellers in the world. Together, they represent a vast repository of both legends and true-life experiences. Because each fishing trip, each cast and each fish caught is a unique event. Some of the stories are meaningful while others are exaggerating and funny. Every fisherman tells his story differently. for my fishing story, I share my biggest catch experience and the days when I went back empty handed; it makes you treasure the days when you have something on the other end of your line which makes your experiences more meaningful. For my project, I wish to change people’s perception about fishing and encourage more people, especially the ladies and children to engage in fishing, making this activity for everybody. With this in mind, I created Maris, a new generation fishing gear which is capable to allow novice to pick up the hobby by making fishing more intuitively.
