Abstract: Understanding the mechanism of failure in composite such as carbon-fiber reinforced composite (CFRP) is crucial in the industries. One such industry is the aviation industry. This is because high performance airplane such as Boeing 707, is mostly made up of composite material. Hence, various studies and tests have been developed for such material. In this project, we use short beam shear test (SBS) combined with thermograph to study the mechanism of composite failure. SBS test is a destructive test where the material is loaded to failure and during the test, the process is recorded using an infrared camera and various analyses are perfromed together using the force displacement curve obtained from the SBS test and the thermograph obtained from the infrared camera. These analyses will provide an insightof using force-displacement graph to detect the energy released from CFRP during plastic deformation and how this energy release is different under different circumstance and how the energy released could be related to the thermograph.
