Authors: Foo, Xiang Chao

Issue Date: 2014
Abstract: Twenty years ago, more than half of the top 20 biggest container ports were in America or Europe. Now Asia has 14 of the top 20 container ports in the region, of which 9 are from China. In terms of actual cargo volume, the share of Intra-Asia has already overtaken Trans-Pacific volume and Asia-Europe trade volume from 19% to 21% within a short period of 2008-2012. The average growth rate in Intra-Asia containerized trade segment has been the highest at 6.4%, against other trade corridors witnessing below 5% growth level. There are currently 7 out of the top 10 operators of ships between 500-3000 TEUs that are Asia-based with strong Intra-Asia presence.
