Abstract: The objective of this report is to study the strength and ductility of high strength concrete columns by the use of analysis software. Research was done by Li Bing and R. Park in 2004, deriving upon equations which can be used for quantities of confining reinforcement required in high strength concrete columns for adequate ductility. This study conducted analysis on six cases by Sato with varying concrete compressive strength (between 60 to 80 MPa), axial load level (ranging from 0.2 to 0.3) and its maximum drift capacity – and having fixed yield strength of both its longitudinal and transverse reinforcement at 460 MPa. DIANA, a finite element solutions software was used for the analysis. The results from the analysis of the six cases thus validate the proposed equation, thus allowing it to be used as a good estimate design equation. This thus further reinforces the research, justifying the reliability of the equation since it is able to provide a close estimation of reinforcement required in the high strength columns.
