Abstract: The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has always provided quality living for the people of Singapore. Owning a unit is affordable with government grants and subsidies. A unit consists of a living room, a store room, two to three bedrooms, a few bathrooms and of course the kitchen. The Kitchen area is usually where laundry drying is also carried out. With the improvement and advancement of knowledge and technology, we are able to improve the laundry drying facility in existing HDB units. The Wireless Rain Protection System is a smart home system installed in the unit to enhance user capability. It eases the daily troubles of clothes drying. This system will be able to control the motion of the bamboo poles that are hanging outside the kitchen window with the use of a mobile device. By sending a message from the mobile device, the user will be able to control if the bamboo poles go out to dry the clothes or come back in. This smart home system has other applications as well. It can be further implemented where it takes control of other electronic devices. For example, a message can be sent to turn on a light in a designated bedroom. Another application would be a message sent to the living room air conditioner to turn on 2 hours ahead of time to ventilate cool air throughout the living room. This report explores more of these possibilities.
