Title: | Applications of energy absorption strategies in industry | Authors: | Lee, Jun Yi | Keywords: | DRNTU::Engineering::Mechanical engineering::Motor vehicles | Issue Date: | 2014 | Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to review the current practices for energy absorption devices in the industry and expand on the scope of the previous study. The industries that were reviewed in this study were acoustic, land transport, and road safety equipment, based on their materials and designs. The information obtained on existing energy absorption devices was classified based on industries – sound, transport, and safety. With this categorization, technologies in the commercial sector can be better understood by researchers and improved further if required. From the literature review for each absorption device, it can be seen that the acoustic absorption devices place equal importance on both materials as well as design, whereas land transport and safety equipment is more dependent on the type of material. This narrows down the current industrial needs and the research direction for each of the industries. While some of the technology is already available, most countries are not yet utilizing it and this could suggest that some of the technological solutions may not be as practical or cost-effective to be widely adopted. Through the analysis of the Finite Element Models, we have seen that similar data and models can be used for accurate simulation and sharing findings help researchers save time and resources. Therefore, having openness to collaborations is especially crucial in the energy absorption industry as better devices brings about greater safety and reduces cost for the society. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/61355 | Schools: | School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
