dc.description.abstractIn today’s world where efficiency and portability have become more important than ever, Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) is becoming the preferred design for power supply circuits. A SMPS is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator to generate the desired voltage which is essentially the power required for a device to work. As compare to Linear Power Supply (LPS), it has higher efficiency and significant reduction in size, weight and cost. However, designing of SMPS is more complicated than LPS. The purpose of this project is to develop a high frequency (20 kHz) SMPS intended for commercial application in order to pursue low manufacturing cost. The SMPS is expected to have 12V, 2A and 6V, 1A output. Before the construction, basic understanding of SMPS, the various topologies and its component required for designing is necessary. Flyback converter was chosen out of other topologies as based on the power specification for designing the SMPS for this project. For the design, PSIM window based circuit simulator software was used to construct and simulate the SMPS circuit design. The design was divided into 7 blocks and they are EMI & Inrush, Rectification & Input Filter, Power Switch, Power Transformer, Output Rectification & Output Filter, Voltage feedback and PWM Controller. The simulation result of the SMPS circuit design which comprised input voltage fluctuation effect and short circuit test were investigated and discussed in this report. Furthermore, a rough estimation of the component cost for the design was included. Last but not least, recommendations for use in other application were made based on the discussion result.en_US
