Title: | On iconi-city : situating home in an image-conscious city | Authors: | Lim, Ruth Fang Hui | Keywords: | DRNTU::Humanities | Issue Date: | 2014 | Abstract: | In this paper I will study the iconic images of Singapore as sites of commercialism, globalization and non-place according to post-modern thought. Many cities rely on the notion of the iconic as an artificial or intentional representation of the city, constructed as a means of reconstructing the perceived view of it. I view the iconic architecture as textures to the city that not only provide the context to its place, but also the exhibition of historical narrativity and culture. My analysis focuses on the Merlion as the forerunner in this race towards an ultramodern landscape that conflates the postmodern with the postcolonial. Over and above, I posit that Singapore performs the role of a floating signifier, one that means nothing and everything at the same time; that preserves and re-invents its heritage and yet, embraces the evolution of its identity. My research concludes that the destruction of the iconic necessarily implies the death of the city, which is ultimately a result of the post-modern imagination that furthers imagined-nations. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/61665 | Schools: | School of Humanities and Social Sciences | Research Centres: | Centre for Liberal Arts and Social Studies | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
