Yeng Pway Ngon is an outstanding writer in Singapore Chinese Literature. He is also a pioneer and an advocate of modernism in literature. He has written many different literary genres, and showed great achievements in his full-length novels. Yeng is daring in his creations and this can be seen from many of his books. His writings also displayed different interests and concerns in the society. This thesis aims to discuss Yeng’s contribution to Singapore Chinese Literature, while using Sao Dong as an example. The main focus of analysis will be on the two distinguishing features in the novel, the narrative and erotic writing. The narrative is rarely used in Singapore Chinese Literature and has allowed the author and readers to have a different experience as compared to the traditional way of writing. The successful erotic writing is even a “taboo” in local context. This thesis hopes to bring forth Yeng’s contributions through thorough analysis of his work.
