Eileen Chang and Wang Anyi, the well-known modern female writers, are also known as the Shanghai School (海派) writers. They have written a series of Shagnhai novels that are representative of their times. This paper focuses on Eileen Chang’s The Affinity of Half a Lifetime and Wang Anyi’s The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, to analyze the similarities and differences between the narrative effects from the narrative point of view. The paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the writers and the novels. The second to the fifth chapter discuss focalization, artistic effects brought by the change of perspective as well as the comparison of the characters and endings in the novels. Through the use of the “narration”+ “story” formula, I’ve discovered the different narrative effects from the two novels and I believe that it creates more values for the novels.
