Historical records have shown that, the Yuan dynasty was a tumultuous period of culminating tensions mainly between two ethnic groups, the Mongols and the Han Chinese. The former in power, while the latter oppressed. That has in turn been a contributing factor in shaping popular albeit fallacious sentiments about this period over the years. This study aims to encourage readers to change their perspective on the issue and understand that it is flawed to assume that people belonging to the same ethnic group are able to interact harmoniously with one another while people of different ethnic groups are incapable of co-existing peacefully. And that interaction or even intimate friendships are possible between different ethnic groups despite the tense political climate of that time. The research for this paper will be based on poems from Yuan Shi Xuan(元诗选), which is a collection of Yuan poems chosen and arranged by Qing dynasty researcher and poet, Gu Si Li. The choice of Yuan poems over the other periods in China history stems from the fact that poems during this period are often overlooked due to a myriad of reasons, including the shift in power to a ruler of foreign ethnicity and the overshadowing of Yuan poems by the more recognized Tang poems, which is viewed as the epitome of ancient Chinese poems. Additionally, topics of ethnic groups’ relations during this period are often reflected through history records and stories, with lesser emphasis on Yuan poems. Thus, the focus on Yuan poems in this paper aims to draw more attention to this little explored literature genre.
