Abstract: This research project examined how surface design could complement the work of occupational therapists (OTs) during sensory integration therapy (SIT) for children living with sensory processing disorders (SPDs). In doing so, it also explored the synergy between occupational therapists and the designer through surface design to develop products that inspires imaginative and therapeutic play. My interest to pursue this topic was largely motivated by the URECA project Tactile Textiles - which I took on in 2012 / 2013. The project spurred me to explore the potential of textiles and surfaces beyond conventional fashion and decoration use. Building on this critical reflection on material and textile design, it was my wish to explore ways material and textile design can help children with sensory processing disorders and their families through this project. Sensory Pizza, a therapeutic tool that complements sensory integration therapy sessions with children with sensory processing disorder was developed as a result of this design research project. Sensory Pizza was tested at an occupational therapy centre with children and yielded positive respond from both the Occupational Therapists and the children. The Occupational Therapists were enthusiastic to incorporate Sensory Pizza in future therapy sessions at their centres.
