Abstract: A Wallflower in a Garden City is a visual-communications-cum-social-art project that centers on the artist’s insistent personal struggle against the feeling of chronic loneliness—caused by her displacement in the garden city of Singapore. It seeks to investigate the notion that loneliness can be treated, if not cured, through a mindful approach towards challenging social experiences that put into test her pre-established boundaries and limitations of the self. Loneliness entraps minds in pessimism; to shed the negative presumptions, it is necessary to tackle the anxiety at its core and challenge the established self-norms and conventions. The artist is a wallflower, and she shall embark on a journey of social recuperation, leaving the zone of comfort so as to rediscover her social potency and achieve the state of belongingness.
