Abstract: With the increasing connectivity of today’s world, communication between people is no longer bounded by geographical boundaries. As people travel out of their countries to explore the rest of the world, or as they communicate with people from another country, differences in language is likely to pose a problem for effective communication to take place. In light of this, there is hence an increasing need for translation services. This project aims to build a translation application on a mobile platform, which would allow greater portability and convenience, especially for tourists and people who are travelling to a foreign country. Apart from the basic text to text translation functionality, this project would also implement an image to text translation function, which would be especially useful for users who have absolutely no command of the language they want to translate and hence are unable to manually input the text. The project would make use of the Android platform, and this report would provide an overview of the required technologies in this application, as well as how these technologies were implemented. It would also give an insight of the limitations of the application built and areas for further development.
