Issue Date: 1993
Abstract: The topic of this whole project is Information Technology (IT). IT was chosen by the group in recognition of its undeniable impact felt throughout today's world. The development of IT is strongly encouraged and supported by the government as it is an important strategic tool in an economy which emphasises the concept of value-added as a comparative advantage. In the public sector, many ministries and government departments have already been converted from manually operated organisations to highly computerised ones. This demonstrates the government's commitment to its firm belief that IT increases efficiency. Taking their cue from the public sector, many private firms have also computerised their operations to harvest the many advantages of IT. The social implications of the extensive use of IT involve issues such as people's work, health, privacy and personal freedom. The objective of the project is to have a better understanding of the development, application and impact of IT in Singapore.
