Title: Critical success factors of building information modelling (BIM) adoption and implementation by the construction industry in Singapore

Abstract: Governments from developed countries around the world including Singapore have been implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) in their Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry work practice in the last 5 years. The successful implementation of BIM at project level needs thorough planning by client and all the project participants (Project Managers, Architects, Engineers, Contractors, Subcontractors and Fabricators) to achieve smooth transition from traditional approach to integrate this emerging technology, BIM into the project workflow (Arayici et al, 2011a). Implementing BIM takes time, resources and creates unavoidable learning curve along the way. The implementation of BIM can be counter-productive if it is not supported by new workflow (Arayici et al, 2011a, Arayici et al., 2011b). A potential way to achieve smooth and successful transition would be to establish a BIM execution plan in the various stages of the project: planning, design, construction, and operation. This project focuses on the implementation of BIM during the construction stage by Singapore contractor firms. The main objective of the project is to assist companies who are thinking of choosing or have already chosen to apply successfully for BIM technology in their firms. Three contractor companies will be identified. A self-made questionnaire will be sent to them to have a better understanding of their current workflow and level of BIM usage. This will be followed by an interview to gather information on the uses of BIM in their firms during construction stage by interviewing BIM experts from these firms. The findings will be analysed and presented in this report. The critical success factors will be identified through literature and interviews.
