Abstract: The main objective of this report is to determine the factors that contribute to the growth trend of the construction sector in Singapore. The period under study is from 1983 to 1992. The growth of the industry is based on the yearly total value of contracts awarded of all construction companies registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). The data for this project were obtained from secondary sources. This includes reports from statutory boards, the press clippings and other publications. To lay the foundation of the study, the growth of the industry for the past ten years were looked into. This is followed by a study of how the various factors affect the growth of the industry over the years. The factors identified are : economic performance, construction demand in the public and private sector, technological advancements, overseas investment and costs of construction. A forecast of the likely conditions of the industry for the near future was made. Estimates were made on the likely demand for construction activities from the residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and civil engineering sectors. Finally, case studies of three construction companies whose holding companies are listed in the Stock Exchange of Singapore were conducted. The aim of this study is to analyze the growth of the construction arm of these companies by applying the knowledge we have acquired from the earlier part of our report.
