Abstract: Air is one of the most important elements that all living beings on earth cannot live without. The awareness of the live-critical importance for air, compared to water and energy, has been long time ignored and much late. Since the industrial revolution which took place in England in 18th Century, the quality of air has been deteriorated tremendously and the emission of CO2 green-house gas has great effect in the world climate change. Advancement in technology not only brings about innovations and comfort, it also brought with it major environmental problems such as global warming, acid rain and depletion of ozone layers. Hence it is important to monitor and control the air pollution. Using nanotechnology, gas detectors are used widely throughout the world in the field of safety, health and control systems. This report will describe the causes and effects of air pollution, research on gas sensing techniques on detecting and reducing of air pollution, types of nanotechnology gas sensors and their applications, and finally the measures on environmental protection.
