Title: Welder certification for pipe welding

Abstract: Welding is always widely used in heavy industry like Oil and Gas pipe lines. Performing a good quality welding highly relies on the welder skill. Welding certification test is the test to ensure welder’s skill meets the criteria of specific international welding codes. Welding certificate test is becoming more and more important since it is the starting point for the organization to evaluate the welder and control the welding quality. But it is considered be another kind of cost in the production. This paper aims at how to conduct the pipe welder certification test more efficiently to save the cost. Totally 8 sections of tests were conducted to a group of welders based on different welding process, base metal material and types of joints. The 8 sections of test were designed to simulate the multiple products in Oil and Gas piping market to make sure the welder was feed to the market after passed these tests. A guidance to conduct the welder certification test focus on pipe welding is created based on the test parameters and data record. It can guide the company make their test more efficient and cheap. This paper focus on piping welder and AWS code. It gives a concept to improve the certificate test. In the future, developing the welder training and certification system for multiple industries and products under different welding code is a trend .The data and record in this paper is useful on it also.
