Abstract: A fully biodegradable metallic esophageal stent implantation is an ideal treatment for preventing occlusion and narrowing of the human esophagus, particularly in benign esophageal diseases condition. The most important advantage is the removal of the need for a second surgical intervention to remove an implanted stent. It also demonstrates the potential advantage in mechanical strength and anti-migration features. Until recently, there is still a lack of understanding of the performance of the biodegradable magnesium alloy esophageal stent either in vitro or in vivo. To achieve better understanding, this project investigates the degradation behaviors of the magnesium alloy in simulated static chemical environment of esophagus in vitro and the degradation behaviors and biocompatibility of a magnesium alloy stent in vivo, i.e. in pig model. A pseudo-esophageal test system simulating the critical esophageal environmental conditions for systematic development of metallic esophageal stent with degradation controllability feature is developed.
