Title: | SPLACE | Authors: | Chua, Sheryl Ai Juan | Keywords: | DRNTU::Visual arts and music | Issue Date: | 2016 | Abstract: | The inability to articulate or visually depict my interest in the distinction between space and place, eventually spurs as an important requisite to produce a personal interpretation and distinctive definition of space and place. I perceive space as movement where humans have no attachment and more like visitors of that particular space, and place as constant where humans have some form of attachment, relationship, purpose, task or role like inhabitants of that place. As the world seems to be obsessed with speed, constant change in this fast-paced society, it makes me feel like we are just transcending, transiting and moving from space to space. There are little or no connections we share with the places we are in now as we are always on-the-move, always fleeting and passing. As I begin to construct new images from preconceived pictures as well as new photographs, where I take pictures with neither fixed, predetermined nor pre-set locations or destinations in mind, I direct myself by chance, luck, instinct or light. From this perspective, my interest in exploring the distinction between space and place inadvertently developed into the duality of the duo where space and place seem to co-exist in my attempt to emulate a place. Through SPLACE, I hope to transform images of places into something familiar yet strange, something that the viewer not only looks at, but also studies and questions. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/67141 | Schools: | School of Art, Design and Media | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
