It is necessary to use inverters with high advanced pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme to minimize power losses and harmonic distortion in order to provide better efficiency. With the improvement of power electronic devices, the three phase voltage source inverter is capable of converting DC power to AC power with the function of variable magnitude and variable frequency. This thesis will cover the advantages and disadvantages of two different PWM techniques which are sinusoidal PWM and Space vector PWM. Comparison will be made between these two schemes by analyzing the output harmonic distortion spectrum and DC utilization rate. Space vector PWM is the best performance among the PWM schemes due to several factor such as minimize switching action and low total harmonic distortion. However, implementation of this scheme is not as simple as SPWM.
