Abstract: Research has indicated that an organization’s ability to develop and sustain a culture capable of delivering quality products and services over time can achieve sustainable high performance. The shipping industry has witnessed a large number of global firms which have harnessed their unique organizational culture characteristics to their competitive advantage leading to high performance. This project aims to study the impact of organizational culture on employee behaviours and how this, in turn leads to performance. Surveys and interviews were conducted to obtain opinions from maritime professionals across all levels in the management from both local and multinational companies to discern employee satisfaction level in the industry. This is established that highly satisfied employee will perform better at work and high satisfaction level leads to higher retention rate. Further analysis of the results revealed that retention rate can be influenced by the nature of the job, the company environment and external environment in the industry. Findings illustrate that a flat organizational structure with flexible culture, reasonable remuneration and welfare, proper training, and an amicable environment are most desirable traits in retaining the employees in the long run. External environment also affects employee loyalty to the company. A booming market will provide more opportunities that lure the employees away and vice versa when the market is poor. A dissatisfied employee would stay at work but perform badly when the market is at its roughest, which is where the shipping industry is at now. Hence, it is crucial for shipping companies to have a positive culture that keep the employees satisfied in order to have sustainable high performance.
