Abstract: There is growing interest in renewable energy sources and its uses in the recent days. The Photovoltaic (PV) and wind are the most dominant renewable energy sources. These renewable energy sources are easily affected by the temperature, radiance and other factors due to its intermittent nature. To balance the generation and demand mismatch in the system, hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is used. With the HESS we can get the advantages from various energy storage system combinations. In general, battery is sensitive to rapid charging and discharging whereas supercapacitor is tolerant to rapid charging and discharging. As the characteristics of the supercapacitor and battery are different, selection of the available converter/inverter are to be done carefully. This project aims to determine the optimal choice of converter/inverter for battery and super capacitors. Basic control of the converters will be using basic algorithms through MATLAB. The system studied in this project is a Bidirectional buck boost converter to connect the battery and supercapacitor to DC grid. This project aims to determine the optimal settings of the buck and boost converters to be used so as to achieve optimal output when a battery and supercapacitor is connected to the system.
