Abstract: Power network includes power generation, transmission and distribution system. The electrical power is normally generated at 11kV at power station. It will be transmitted over a very far distance at high voltage, and finally be distributed to the consumers. In this network, substation plays an important role. It transforms the voltage from low to high or the reverse. Since substation is so important in the power system, and the cost to build it is also expensive, it is necessary to have adequate protection method to protect it. This project focuses on one of the 22kV/6.6kV substation which is under construction at PSA Pasir Panjang Terminal. The main equipment, switchgear and transformer are introduced first, so that to have a rough idea about the substation. By studying the protection method used in the substation, the deficiency of the existing fire protection system was found out. One objective of this project is providing suggestions to modify existing fire alarm system. Three suggestions are provided which include use addressable fire alarm system, link the fire alarm system to the SMS alert system and install fire detection system in the substation. Since fire detection system is introduced, the other objective of the project is to design the system. By comparing between heat and smoke detectors, smoke detectors are chosen for the design. Following what will be done at site, the smoke detectors are also being separated into different zones for clearly indication on the fire alarm panel in case of fire. Necessary testing workings has to be done before handing over the system to the owner, the testing procedures are introduced in this report. By following the suggestions given in the report, especially by installing the smoke detection system, the substation will have a better protection in the case of fire.
