Non-destructive testing of metallic specimens using "B" and "C" scan ultrasonic procedures

Abstract

In recent years, ultrasonic testing has become very well known within practitioners of Non Destructive Testing. However, there are no recognized standard for weld inspection using “C” Scan equipment. Until today, the varying results obtained from Non Destructive Testing operators worldwide makes it hard to distinguish the different characteristics of every type of defect. Thus, the reliability of its post-analysis and interpretation depended entirely on the expertise of the Non Destructive Examination evaluator. The “A” scan is in fact, a widely used method in the industry due to its simplicity and versatility. Meanwhile, the “C” Scan has always been the less popular choice, due to being mildly complex in nature. Nevertheless, the “C” scan possesses its own hidden advantages that shall be investigated in detail.
