Abstract: Drag Finishing is a high-energy media finishing technology developed for fast and precise finishing of high value and sensitive parts with applications for burr removal to improve edges along complex features. On the other hand, Drag Finishing requires the whole part to be inserted into the machine where all of the surfaces being exposed and burred. However for this study, only local slots with burr features being exposed to the finishing media while the rest of the surfaces being protected by a protective layer. Therefore the basis of this study was to create a polymer sleeves that acted as protective cover for coupons with local slots while undergoing the processing of deburring. The challenges were that the author had to come up with the designs for the coupons, polymer sleeves and the fixtures to the drag finishing machine before they were sent for fabrication. The experiment was carried out based on the planned Key Process Variable by varying the rotary speed, and process time. Characterisation equipment such as the Stylus Profilometer, and Atos Scanbox were used to collect data for both the pre-process and post-process. Parametric studies are performed in Polyworks to compare the effects of Material Removal Rate, and geometry on the effects of the coupons. The results demonstrated that the longer the process time of coupons, the higher the Material Removal Rate. In addition, the image captured by the Microscopy showed the removal of burr on the coupons.
