Abstract: The polycrystalline thin wire configuration is important in the industry of micro-electro-mechanical-systems. The effective elastic modulus of a polycrystalline wire was found to be different than its bulk material counterpart when its cross section is in the scale of grain size. In this paper, the effective shear modulus of copper polycrystalline wires was estimated through finite element analysis with statistical consideration. It was found that when the number of grains in the cross section decreases, the effective shear modulus of the wire deviates from the Hill’s average shear modulus. Further inferring from previous studies, it was found that Young’s modulus and shear modulus of a thin wire polycrystalline aggregate are independent of each other, and the concept of Poisson ratio is not present.
