Title: | Fabrication and characterisation of micro-structure fibre based sensors | Authors: | Low, Edwin Chun Wah | Keywords: | DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering::Optics, optoelectronics, photonics | Issue Date: | 2016 | Abstract: | This report comprises of the documentation of the fabrication and characterisation of micro-structure fibre based sensors. Long has the feature of communication overshadowed the usefulness of fibre optics. The study of fibre applications purposed as real life sensors has seen great improvements in recent years. Various fibre designs of micro level of physical structure have been attempted on to achieve high sensitivity and stability. A wide variety of sensing parameters has been proven possible by the fibre sensors. Focusing on strain, axial twist, temperature and curvature, detailed explanations on lab setup for aforementioned parameters would be covered with relevant calculations. The experiments would be conducted with a laser injection through the fibre sensor and its frequency spectrum response data would be obtained. Based on the mechanics of optics interference and grating reflection, relationship between the parameters and the wavelength shift would be established from the data. The relationship would provide the sensitivity and stability of the fibre sensor. Results obtained would be compared with existing papers involving fibre sensors of different micro-structure. Mainly dealing with three and seven Multi-Core Fibres, physical alterations would be made to enhance its sensing properties. Length of Multi Core Fibre (MCF), twist per length, splicing of Multimode Fibre (MMF) are all different approaches taken in the experiments. Theoretical calculations would be made to justify if experimented sensors could be used for multi-sensing applications. The ability to sense more than one parameter concurrently or immune to unnecessary factors is critical in practical applications. This project could be furthered upon more fibre sensor designs and other physical parameters not tested before. Parameters just as pH level or density are factors that could be considered. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/69338 | Schools: | School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering | Research Centres: | CNRS International NTU THALES Research Alliance | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
