Abstract: Studies have shown the plethora of social forces that shape educational outcomes. After gathering data from the vast amount of research on education, it is found that peer and parental influence and school programs influence one’s academic achievements. Also, the 2010 and 2015 Census by Statistics Singapore have shown a correlation between English as home language and educational attainment. With English being the lingua franca and main medium of instruction in education in Singapore, I explore whether English as home language is a significant factor in affecting one’s educational attainment. I then ask how this compares to other factors in influencing one’s educational attainment. The results of this study, showed that home language as English did not come up as a prominent factor, while parental influence and expectations played a more significant role.
