|Title:||Relationship between exercise motivations and exercise parameters among undergraduate runners||Authors:||Toh, Jin Wei||Keywords:||DRNTU::Social sciences::Psychology::Motivation||Issue Date:||2017||Abstract:||Existing literatures suggested several health and performance benefits associated with participation in frequent, long duration and vigorous exercise. Although motivations of exercise participation have been studied extensively, little studied the relationship between exercise motivations and exercise parameters (i.e. exercise frequency, intensity and duration). This study therefore aims to explore the various motivation factors associated with each exercise parameters, in the effort to encourage increase participation in all three parameters to achieve optimal training and health benefits. 123 runners, age 19 to 40 were recruited from Nanyang Technological University to participate in a survey consisting of instruments measuring exercise motives, behavioral regulation in exercise, exercise frequency, exercise duration and participation in vigorous physical activity. Information of the study were presented to the participants and informed consent were obtained prior to data collection. Using multiple regression, Integrated Regulation (beta=.491, p ≤ .05) was found to be the greatest predictor of exercise frequency while Competition (beta=.323, p ≤ .05) was found to be the greatest predictor of participation in vigorous exercise. The study has noted that no motivation factor significantly predicted exercise duration. The study recommends greater internalization of exercise benefits to encourage frequent exercise behavior. It also recommends exercising in competitive environment to encourage greater participation in vigorous exercise. Future research may replicate similar studies on other exercises to validate the findings of this study and develop greater understanding of the topic.
