Abstract: The internet of things or IoT is widely used around the world today in multiple industries. Current IoT technologies typically consist of short range and low power consuming technologies operating in the unlicensed spectrum, and long range and high power consuming cellular technologies operating in the licensed spectrum. Recently, there is an emerging group of technologies known as low power wide area network (LPWAN) that boasts great distances while still consuming low power. This project aims to explore the technologies found in the LPWAN space and develop an experiment to test the maximum range of a specific LPWAN technology, LoRa. The experiment will comprise of multiple tests in line of sight and non line of sight conditions. The experiment design methods and considerations will be introduced over the course of the report and the results can be used to implement a future LPWAN network based on LoRa.
