Title: | Smart sensor to monitor ripeness of vegetables | Authors: | Quah, Abigail Shu En | Keywords: | DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering | Issue Date: | 2017 | Abstract: | The constant population growth across the world led to the ever-increasing demands for food production. A sign of our growing affluence is easily reflected through consumer desire for quality and variety of food found within local communities. Consumers set higher acceptance limits while choosing food leading to companies racing to meet the higher expectations. The extensive connectivity across the world through various modes of transport allowed companies to transport food products with greater ease. During the process of food transportation, a large quality of food products transported turns bad and are thrown away as they fail to meet the acceptance limits of consumers. Similarly, household food wastage from refrigerator becomes more significant with hectic working lifestyles. The lack of personal time after working hours and the lack of knowledge in handling food to prolong the shelf life has led to greater good wastage within households. Food wastage rates have been increasing at an exceeding rate which is not acceptable given the increasing world population. With rising food wastage, greater economic damage are incurred to both companies and countries. It is important that we increase food security by reducing perishable food waste during global imports. This study aims to search for alternative methods to reduce food wastage with the aim to design a portable unit of chemoresistive senor that helps to monitor the ripeness of vegetables. The introductory report summarises the findings of the current methods for monitoring of food quality. The report will include improved technology and new research ideas to bring about new insights to the future of reducing food wastage. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/71004 | Schools: | School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering | Research Centres: | Photonics Research Centre | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
