Abstract: Reinforced concrete has been a widely used construction material due to its strength and versatility. However, corrosion of the reinforcement is a very significant problem as it reduces the tensile strength of the reinforced concrete element. Corrosion takes place when there is carbonation or an injection of chlorides into the system. Therefore, it is a serious issue especially for structures near the sea. The extent of the damage of the reinforcement has to be measured carefully in order to make a proper decision regarding the safety of existing reinforced concrete structures and decide the right course of action to repair and strengthen the building when the need arises. The aim of this research is to investigate the degradation of steel reinforcement when subjected to accelerated corrosion tests. The degradation include: 1) the degree of corrosion present in the steel, 2) loss of yield and ultimate strengths and 3) loss of ultimate strain values. Stirrups and longitudinal reinforcing bars are both investigated in this experiment as they both experience tensile action when the structural elements are being loaded. In this research, steel reinforcement of 2 types will be used, plain R8 bars and ribbed T20 bars. 28 R8 bars and 10 T20 bars of varying corrosion levels will be selected and cleaned. The corrosion levels of the bars will be measured in terms of mass and pitting corrosion. A tensile test will be conducted and a linear regression analysis will be performed to predict the effects mass and pitting corrosion have on the mechanical properties of the steel. The regression analysis will then be compared against other papers.
