Title: Protection of cyclists

Abstract: Cycling is becoming increasingly popular and this trend is being buoyed by governmental policies. However, laws, infrastructure and mindsets have yet to keep up with the growing numbers of cyclists on the road. The dearth in laws and infrastructure to better safeguard cyclists, compounded by motorists’ lack of experience in interacting with cyclists on the road puts cyclists at great risk. This report aims to investigate the accidents involving cyclists on the roads, as well as attempt to put forth new measures and improve on existing ones from governmental, organizational and individual perspectives. It is our hope that these measures can play a part in helping Singapore make huge forays towards becoming a cycling-friendly nation. Our data obtained from Singapore’s Traffic Police Headquarters has thrown up the following distressing trends – bicycle accidents occurring at slip roads, bicycle accidents occurring between 7pm to 7am, bicycle accidents involving taxis, bicycle accidents occurring at junctions, bicycle accidents involving cyclists over the age of 50 and bicycle accidents involving cyclists of foreign nationalities. Added focus and analysis will be accorded to fatal accidents. Ensuring that cyclists can cycle in the safest environment possible, while not compromising the safety of other road users, is the responsibility of all facets of society and does not rest solely on the government.
