Examples of these new approaches include application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the field of construction management, use of precast construction and prefabricated prefinished volumetric construction (PPVC) as new construction methods, etc. Compared to traditional construction practices, those new approaches are aimed to improve safety, synergy and productivity throughout a construction project. Recent studies have been working on application of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) at construction sites to help the management team to better monitor the kinematic geographic locations of precast or PPVC elements before and during installation on site; the geographic information is integrated and synchronized simultaneously with BIM to make these physical activities more vivid and timely to site staff. This report introduces another kind of positioning system -- Local Positioning System (LPS). By studying its features, and comparing LPS with GPS, the paper will analyze the potential and feasibility of LPS application at construction sites, which utilize precast or PPVC elements.
