Following the massive and rapid infrastructures construction in Singapore’s dense urban plot, there is a rising demand for the monitoring of geographical condition around the construction site. As the on-going projects may have interference to the safety and proper functionality of the surrounding structures, a high resolution, fast response rate soil movement sensing system is to be developed to conduct a real time monitoring of soil stability. Targeting these features, Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS) is selected to upgrade the traditional mechanical soil inclinometer. This report will start with an overview of currently available Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS) and their applications in Structural Health Monitoring, followed by laboratory tests on various sensor type and their evaluation in different environment. The body part will focus on the different sensor system designs. Major simulation test results will be studied and concluded. Eventually, by the comparison of the different sensor designs, this study focuses to develop and build a prototype Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) soil inclinometer. With laboratory simulation test, the feasibility and capability of this prototype model will be verified and examined.en_US
