Title: Development of hybrid antimicrobial nanomaterials

Abstract: One of the emerging challenges that the 21st century biomedical industry faces is antibiotic resistance. These antibiotic resistant microbial are mostly known as “superbugs” which have made the traditional antibiotics less effective. To combat these “superbugs”, new antimicrobial materials have been developed recently in biomedical research via the integration of nanotechnology. In this project, a combination of antimicrobial nanomaterials consisting of gold nanorod and cationic polymer was synthesized. The ultimate target of the antimicrobial nanomaterial is to kill the microbial via cytoplasmic membrane disruption of the bacteria. The main goal of this project is to successfully synthesize the antimicrobial nanomaterial and characterize it via proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and zeta potential. Minimal inhibitory concentration test was also carried out and the results from it shows that 130 μg/mL concentration of the synthesized antimicrobial nanomaterial is enough to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).
