Title: Generalized shear of a soft solid

Abstract: Shear strength, along with other mechanical properties, are integral in various ways. In structural and mechanical engineering for example, the design and construction of components requires the knowledge of shear strength, showing the significance of such mechanical properties. In recent year, the trend of understanding soft solid are on the rise, as it serves as a very good substitution for many application in analytical studies. The objective of this study are: first, mechanical properties and behaviour of soft solid when under the effect of shear force, specifically mode 2 shear. Second, the effects of crack in the propagation of mode 2 shear. The experiment setup are design with a few considerations, mainly the ease of use and the simulation of professional equipment. The experiment setup are manufactured with inexpensive and common materials. The experiment are conducted with a variation in experiment setup, basic, single shear box, dual shear box. The specimen used in the experiment are made of gelatine, and have a variation in concentration, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 gelatine concentration, as well as variation in dimensions. The shear angle as well as the change in specimen height were recorded from the experiment and discussion. The basic setup shows the relevance of the specimen concentration, after the initial experiment, it is recorded that the specimen with 2.0 gelatine concentration have a different behaviour as compared to the other two specimen. Further experiment with the variation of experiment setup with shear box recorded non-linearity behaviour from the specimens. A crack was made in the specimen and the experimental results were recorded and discussed as well. Future work on improving the experiment setup to improve the quality of results and also increase the type of results recorded. This study could possess research value and could be an initial study for further insight in this area of research and also the application of shear strength and soft solid behaviour under shear in biomedical studies.
